Caution: it’s going to be delicious - so you may soon start feeling hungry. Nutrition for psoriasis

Time and again, psoriasis sufferers are told all the things they're not allowed to eat. We find that less than encouraging, and so we’re turning the tables. Here we will show you the amazing food that will enrich your life.

There are foods that can trigger a psoriasis flare-up. However - the dose makes the poison. And regardless of whether you have psoriasis or not, everyone can indulge every now and then. The beneficial effect on mental health when we enjoy something special is indisputable.

Today we will show you the world of healthy treats and give you recipes and tips for a healthy diet.

RECOMMENDED FOODS

Fortunately the list of recommended foods is long. Fruit and vegetables are right at the top. Salads with bitter foods such as dandelion or radicchio are particularly recommended.

In addition, all types of cabbage and lots of mushrooms are good for your body. You can include the vegetables raw or steamed in your everyday diet, as this helps to preserve most of their healthy nutrients.

You can’t really go wrong with fruit. Whether strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, apples, or plums, lots of things that grow in our gardens are good for you. Carefully wash fruit and vegetables before you eat them and buy organic if possible. People who like their food really fresh should look around for local, seasonal produce.

You can do something good for yourself by snacking on all types of fruit, provided you don’t add sugar. Only dried fruit, physalis, or fruit purees should rarely be on the menu.

The big hitters for psoriasis nutrition are OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS. They are important for your metabolism and your immune system, and they can help reduce inflammatory processes. Omega-3 fatty acids should regularly appear on your menu.

Rapeseed oil, flaxseed, and walnuts are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. If you’re a bit choosy about your diet, omega-3 capsules might be the best option for you. You can find them in all major drugstores.

FOODS THAT ARE NOT RECOMMENDED

Yes - They are not recommended, but you can still have them every now and then. It’s best to swap wheat flour products for wholegrain. Try different wholegrain products and grain varieties – in an emergency, a slice of white bread is also fine. When it comes to oils and fats, animal products, safflower oil and sunflower oil should be avoided. Classic rapeseed oil and olive oil are a better choice in the kitchen.

You should reduce your overall consumption of animal products. They are not good for your psoriasis. Look around for substitute products. There is a wide selection in grocery stores and you will be amazed how easy it is to avoid meat, or to reduce your meat consumption.

Soy products shouldn’t be used in your morning coffee.

There are now countless alternatives that make it easier to do without. Oat and almond drinks are two good options.

By the way, coffee used to be considered a trigger of psoriasis. But this has since been scientifically disproved. And speaking of drinks - alcohol is harmful for everyone. Whether you have psoriasis or not, you should avoid alcoholic drinks as much as possible. And sugary drinks are also definitely not recommended for your daily diet.

EXAMPLES OF HEALTHY MEALS

Breakfast: Quark with fruit and flaxseed oil/wheat germ oil or wholewheat bread with cream cheese and raw fruit and vegetables Lunch: A balanced meal, e.g.: two handfuls of spelt pasta or brown rice with three handfuls of your choice of vegetables.

Dinner: e.g. vegetable soup or a Beyond Meat burger in a wholegrain bun

TOP TIPS:

Eat raw fruit and vegetables every day

Omega-3 fatty acids

Avoid pro-inflammatory foods such as sugar and products made with white wheat flour

Give your intestines a break. Your intestines are an immune organ that needs to regenerate at night. Eating a light meal in the evening (cooked/steamed) and having a long break from eating overnight (12-13 hours) will help. Why not try a late breakfast! Ideally only eat 2-3 meals during the day.

Healthy snacks such as nuts or natural yogurt and fruit

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and acts as a balm for the skin. Sources of vitamin E

are plant oils, especially wheat germ oil.

Hawthorn tea improves the perfusion of your blood vessels and strengthens your heart muscles.

CAN I ALSO EAT UNHEALTHILY SOMETIMES?

Simply can’t give up certain foods? In all honesty, it’s the same for us too. But try to minimize your consumption of these products and look around for healthy alternatives.

If you’ve had a snack and have a guilty conscience

- we say, you don’t need to. It was worth it to treat yourself. You enjoyed the moment and that’s a good thing.
